Matchbox Boeing B-17 G

Wer öfter hier reinschaut, weiß jetzt schon, was dann folgte ... na klar, Selbstbau der fehlenden Teile.

So - no; this is not the outrageous brand-new Revell-kit. But already many years ago, one could build a proper model even with this rudimentarily Matchbox kit, as far as one was not too shy to put in time and effort. And this model ownes one part, that the Revell-kit is missing - the control-stick of the two MG's below the nose. Bat let me tell, how this came so.
It was lasting a year, before this model was ready for the "first take-off". Matchbox is delivering kits fitting very well, but there is nothing inside what looks like as any interior.
Who ever is visiting me here more frequently, already knows, what happened ... of course, scratchbuilding all the missing parts.
In fact, this was my first four-engined kit, where I added a self-made interior. Equipped with enormous self-confidence and a very well drawing I began the operation.
The cockpit-floor was one needful part of the kit, as were the seats with the control-sticks and the two bulkheads, the one forward was cut in two parts and got the correct shape of a step. The instrument-panel ist totally self-made, as are the floors and seats of navigator and bombardier. I opened the inner hatches und the forward area was equipped with all necessary inclusive the fire-extinguishers. Thereafter i built a complete bomb-compartment and the one for the radio-operator and the gunners, completely with the equipment and the seats. The lower construction of the dorsal-turret was carefully scratchbuilt. The guns of the side-gunner-positions were made of plastic-squares and hot threaded tubules, the ammunition-box of plastic-sheets and ammunition-belt of a simply rubber-band, colored aluminium.
All the thick canopies were replaced by self-made vacus, also the one for the rear-gunners position. There were only the dome for astro-navigation and the ventral and dorsal turrets left.
I decided to apply aluminium-foil all over the aircraft, just leaving these areas colored, which saved the crew of too much sun-dazzling. Now it became, that my self-confidence was seriously tackled the first time. Caused by too heavy rubbing when foiling the wings, the aluminium-sheets were bubbling, which was not a fine view. But, I made a virtue of necessity, remembering the planes surviving heavy anti-aircraft fire. Many of them were damaged just like this one. So I left off the outer port engine, modelled the bulkhead by adding some pipes and airbrushed some "smoke" around it. So it looks like credible.
The decals came out of the box.
And, watching the result, it was worth the whole expenditure.
